Imaging the Earth Today, Earth Drawings panel discussion, Wednesday 20 May, 6pm BST, Zoom

Following the launch of the Earth Drawings Virtual Gallery, which saw an array of submissions from all parts of the AA global community, a panel discussion will be held on Wednesday 20 May to discuss drawing as a medium today. Invited panellists include: architect, artist and AA Tutor Pol Esteve; designers of the virtual Earth Gallery, AA Tutors and founders of Space Popular Fredrik Hellberg and Lara Lesmes; AA Council member and architect Sam Jacob; architect and AA Tutor David Kohn; artist and founding member of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture Madelon Koolhaas-Vriesendorp; and AA Alumna Marie-Louise Raue and architect Paul Francis Feeney; all of whom have a drawing included in the exhibition. Final Juries

Monday 11–Friday 22 May
Final juries will continue to take place online this week. This is an opportunity for students from Foundation, First Year, Experimental and Diploma Programmes to receive feedback on their projects. The full schedule is available on the AA website, and the events are open to members of the School Community.

Open Tutorials

Open Tutorials offer all students the opportunity to get fresh perspectives and extra advice on their design work during 30-minute feedback sessions. In the last of the sessions, Miraj Ahmed, Eleanor Dodman, Shin Egashira, Juliet Haysom, Anderson Inge, Marina Lathouri, Melodie Leung, Inigo Minns and Theo Spyropoulos will be available.

In this workshop hosted by Claire Potter of the AA Writing Centre, participants will develop a clear and comprehensive understanding of what goes into planning, making and delivering a presentation that captures a particular design project.

This week, Head of Archives Ed Bottoms has written about a gravity-defying, skeletal bridge of welded metal that was suspended high above Ching’s Yard by a group of students in 1988. Notices

Geoffrey Salmon (1925-2020)

The AA is deeply saddened to learn of the death of AA alumnus and former Council member Geoffrey Salmon. Geoffrey graduated in 1952 and designed highly influential commercial offices and sheltered housing for the elderly. He kindly donated his student work to the AA Archive in 2010, recording an oral history of his practice with two students. Read more

Postcard

Congratulations to all students that were awarded a High Pass for their work in Environmental and Technical Studies. This project by Ignatio Bhaskhara Putra (Diploma 21), titled ‘Sana Terrae – Magenta Shadow Caster’ was awarded the ETS5 High Pass with Distinction.
